To Live and Shave in L.A. - Alliance Film and Video Co-Op Benefit, July 23, 1994, Miami Beach, Florida
01 The Ass God
02 Deodato Conductor Double
03 Tina Russell, Free
04 Your Fucking Remarks Always Betray You
05 I Used to Pay a Heavy Bribe
06 Kept the Whips Soaking
Nine minutes was a slightly longer set length than we were accustomed to back in '93-'94, but we had reason to warp the fabric, as Rat and I welcomed Ben Wolcott into the deathly Shave cabal with this six-song set performed in support of Miami Beach's long-shuttered Alliance Film and Video Co-Op.
We were recording 'Helen Butte' vs. Masonna Pussy Badsmell at the time, testing combinations of songs at each gig we managed to book. (30-minuten männercreme didn't really take off until August; regional, and national bookings increased shortly thereafter.) The six compositions assayed at the Alliance benefit were written for HB, but "Deodato," "Your Fucking Remarks" and "Kept the Whips" failed to make the final cut.
Harry Pussy toplined the bill, and their spasmodic yawp nicely balanced our dour roar. Volume levels in the (Boswell?) loft were brutal, and the recording of our set reveals little beyond convulsed shrieks of crude tape edits and Rat's oil tanker hull bass, fed through a Russian bootleg hell pedal. Sadly, nary a peep of Ben's oscillator can be heard, but he was there regardless. The occasional aggrieved barking? My vocals, as parsed by the unforgiving din.
A very good night in a city that no longer exists.
